Yes the condensed matter j...Thanks for the comment.
Yes the condensed matter journal club is an excellent resource because it provides expert opinion and it is based on people being motivated to select, read and critique work because they are actually interested in it.

I don't have a well-informed opinion about these recent applications of machine learning. Read the papers, read the research proposal, read the letter. Call a couple of letter writers on the phone. Call a couple of *other* people in the "old folks network" on the phone and ask what they remember from the subject at the last conference or two. That last one has a stupefyingly good useful information content. Of course it has the downside that they then know that you are looking at the person and might try too.

And all this has worked very well.dtvmcdonaldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07594633209626059331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439168179960787195.post-52010392271772346952017-05-30T20:28:06.695+10:002017-05-30T20:28:06.695+10:00https://www.theguardian.com/education/2014/apr/15/...https://www.theguardian.com/education/2014/apr/15/recruiting-academic-staff-university
by Jonathan Wolf, professor of philosophy at University College London and dean of arts and humanities.

He ends the article " But if anyone has an App that will short-circuit the process, do please get in touch.
